The question that started everything

It began with a simple observation that turned out to be anything but simple. Why do people spend hundreds of dollars on mattresses, invest in sleep tracking technology, take magnesium before bed — and still wake up every morning with a neck that takes forty-five minutes to release?

The answer wasn't a better mattress. It wasn't more magnesium. It was something that had been documented in physiotherapy and biomechanics literature for over sixty years and had never made it into the products people actually sleep on.

The cervical spine has a natural forward curve — the cervical lordosis. That curve must be maintained continuously during sleep. When it isn't, the muscles surrounding the neck engage involuntarily throughout the night to compensate for what the pillow is failing to hold. By morning, those muscles have been contracting for seven or eight hours. What people call morning stiffness is actually muscular exhaustion from a night of involuntary labour.

The Axis Pillow is the result of that work. Not a comfort product. A cervical support system — designed around physiology first, and everything else second.

To solve the right problem

The sleep industry is a comfort industry. Its products are optimised for the thirty seconds a customer spends in a showroom, not the eight hours they spend unconscious. Marketing language has filled the gap — "orthopedic," "memory foam," "cervical support" — applied to products that were engineered for softness, not alignment.

Somna Labs exists to do one thing: address the specific mechanical failure that causes chronic morning neck pain and disrupted sleep in otherwise healthy adults. Not with broader claims. With better engineering.
